In founding the Knights of Columbus Father Michael J. McGivney goes back
to the spirit of Christopher Columbus as he used his courage in
discovering the new land. Father McGivney realized the dedication and
the commitment of Columbus in this great adventure.
As we look to the coat of arms, we see the symbol for the Knights of
Columbus, the anchor, indicating the courageous defense of the
principals that the Knights and the Catholic Church stand for. For
the wholesome development of this spirit in our world today we need good
Catholic families. In our prayer cards for the canonization of Father
McGivney we are told that good Catholic family lives should bring about
the Christian education of youth, concern for widows, orphans, the poor,
and lead our young people to the generous service of others. Parents
should work as a team. We know that in cases where there is only a
single parent that the challenge of guiding and encouraging children is
more difficult.
The late Pope John Paul II in his letter to families
says, "The modern Christian family is often tempted to be discouraged
and distressed at the growth of its difficulties. It is an eminent form
of love for parents to have confidence in themselves and pray all the
more for grace and guidance in their efforts to inspire and motivate
their children."
I pray that each of you in your challenges which you
encounter as parents or grandparents might be open in helping each other
as Brother Knights. Each month's special evening for the Knights and
their families might be a stepping stone where opportunities can be
revealed and developed in helping each other in their family lives.
May the lord bless the council, not only with good
Brother Knights, but also with great family men.
Father Ken
