Blogging with Father Ken Bartsch
October 2010

With my "Values Discussion Group" in the VA hospital I often like to discuss rituals and ceremonies. In October I might ask them, "What are the values we celebrate at Halloween? What is that all about?"
It's a question not often asked and I've yet to meet anyone with a clue. Some will tell me it goes back to pre-Christian England and Ireland, when druids led the pagan ceremonies. They might even remember that the word Halloween refers to the following day, the Feast of All Saints, known as All Hallows. It is the "eve of all hallows."
"So what are we celebrating?* I ask again. "What are the values we want to encourage with Halloween, that we want our children to practice?"   It seems to be something about children and neighbors. It's about foolishness and food. "Trick or treat" can be explained although most children don't know its original meaning.
Finally, I suggest the value of Halloween is our fearlessness in the face of the dark. We Christians are not afraid of ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night. As an old celibate, I am interested to see what horror masks appear at Halloween. Most of them are not at all frightening. Little pirates escort little princesses and little spider men. Nothing scary there.
When I Google images of Halloween masks I find Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and Hillary Clinton. It seems that politicians are the most frightening people today, though the spectral face of Michael Jackson also reappears.
So what are we Knights afraid of as we approach Halloween? If we were to create a set of masks to mock and denature our fears what faces would we use?
I think first of all, of Osama Bin Laden. His image has appeared in many places but I've yet to see it on Halloween night. Is he still too frightening for us? Would anyone wear a suicide bomb vest on All Hallows Eve? Are we so scared that we cannot mock his little band of terrorists even on Halloween?
Halloween should be a fun night to remind ourselves and our children of what Jesus said so often, *Do not be afraid.* He has won the victory over sin and death. Our saints attest to that and we go with them fearlessly, with the Lord as our shepherd.

From Our Grand Knight!

Brother Knights,
My Brother Knights, August and September have been wonderful times for our Tri- Parishes and St. Mary's Parish at Lanesville. We have gotten very thankful of our new Priests, and are starting to remember their names. May we continually support them and pray for them and work together for all our parishes. We also need to pray for our military personnel who bravely serve our country, especially; Michael Baldwin, Sarah Alstott's, Joshua Bibb, Sam Chinn, David Fitzgerald, Marc Richardson, Gary Wilson and all of our soldiers who are fighting in foreign countries

I hope more K of C members come to our business meetings which are which are the second Tuesday of the month and our social pitch-in dinner on the Forth Tuesday of the month.
We have our Bingo's every Wednesday evening.. We need more volunteers to help sell pull-tabs to make more money for the Community Organizations, Catholic Charities, St. Elizabeth's, Gibault School, and to help disabled children.

We also have a Fish Fry on the first Friday of every month. We have fried Fish, French fries, baked beans Cole slaw, with white or rye bread, tea, Coffee, punch, and water, with all you can eat. We hope you come and eat some very good food.
May God shine his Blessings on all people born and unborn. God bless America, and continue to pray for an end to abortion, and increase in Vocations for Priests and Nuns. God bless us all and have a blessed September.

Mary, Mother of God, at your request, Jesus worked His first miracle. He changed water into wine for the wedding guests at Cana in Galilee. Over the centuries you have not ceased to obtain countless signs and wonders for the poor, exiled children of Eve. We therefore ask you to intercede with your Divine Son for the miraculous graces which the modern world so desperately needs: For the conversion and reconversion of whole nations to Jesus Christ and His teaching on marriage and the family; For the heroic preservation among Christians of their faith in the indissolubility of marriage, marital fidelity and the loving acceptance of children, as the bedrock of the Christian family; For the courage of martyrs in all of us followers of Christ, that we may witness to His power to overcome the powers of darkness that are bent on destroying the human family and the moral law. Mary, Mother of the Holy Family, and Mother of our families, pray for us. Amen
