Blogging with Father Ken Bartsch
September 2010

      Occasionally, but usually not at Christmastime, I want to announce, "No, Virginia, there is no Santa Claus."
     While at the VA Chaplains Training Center in Hampton, Virginia, I saw a documentary entitled *Lionesses,* about women soldiers in Iraq. Several years ago, Congress determined that women should not go on combat missions with soldiers or marines. However, at the height of the Iraq War, because women were needed in combat zones to reassure, protect and search Iraqi women, female soldiers were actively engaged in searches house to house, neighborhood patrols, and fire fights.
And, of course, they fought * to save themselves and their comrades and to complete their missions. Without the freedom to fight, they would have been serious liabilities to the male soldiers.
     However, because women are not allowed to do combat duty, they are not paid combat pay, despite the dangers they faced when they were in combat.
Congress wants to know nothing about what really happened. Representing the electorate, our leaders believe the Big Lie. That*s the one we tell our children when they*re two years old. It*s the story we tell ourselves into our late years:
    * There is a Santa Claus, and there*s no harm in teaching our children this.
    * Riverboat gambling is acceptable because it*s romantic even if the riverboat

       never     leaves the dock.
    * The Civil War was about States' Rights.
    * We don*t want illegal immigrants in our country.
    * Not In My Backyard! (NIMBY)
    * Recreational drugs are illegal.
    * Americans are law-abiding people.
    * Our taxes are too high.
    * Victims of crime are innocent; unless they brought it upon themselves, in
      which case they*re guilty and deserve what they got.
    * Children are innocent.
    * Children do not drink alcohol; nor do they have sexual feelings.
    *Television and computer game
       violence does not encourage violence.
    * It*s shocking that political and religious leaders commit immoral acts.
    * America will defend freedom, equality and our way of life, but we don't  fight

       access to cheap oil.
    * Everybody in the world wants to have the same freedom we enjoy, but their

       leaders won*t let them.
    * America is a Christian country that welcomes peoples of all nations and  religions.
And so on. The root of the Big Lie is its romanticism. We think it should be that way, therefore it is; although we have no intention of making it that way. (That would cost more than we want to pay.) Because we tell ourselves the Big Lie, we can*t deal with the reality.
    Almost daily reality shouts at us: we want recreational drugs, and pornography and prostitution; we provide children with alcohol; we don*t pay enough taxes to support our way of life; we will ignore a politician*s philandering so long as we agree with his politics; we will initiate war to get cheap oil.
     Two thousand years ago the Christian religion forgot whatever excuse the Romans used to crucify Jesus. We don*t know what crime they hung on him. Was it his prophetic gesture, the cleansing of the temple that finally exhausted their patience? Was it his healing on the Sabbath? Was it mere expedience? We have forgotten their Big Lie.
     We remember that Pilate taunted the Jewish leaders by putting *Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews* in Hebrew, Greek and Latin on a placard over his head. But we don*t remember what capital crime they fabricated to condemn him.
We only remember that his speaking the truth in the face of the Big Lie released a paroxysm of hate, and that we killed him in the name of all that his holy.

Crusade for the Family Prayer
John A. Hardon, S.J.

Mary, Mother of God, at your request, Jesus worked His first miracle. He changed water into wine for the wedding guests at Cana in Galilee. Over the centuries you have not ceased to obtain countless signs and wonders for the poor, exiled children of Eve. We therefore ask you to intercede with your Divine Son for the miraculous graces which the modern world so desperately needs: For the conversion and reconversion of whole nations to Jesus Christ and His teaching on marriage and the family; For the heroic preservation among Christians of their faith in the indissolubility of marriage, marital fidelity and the loving acceptance of children, as the bedrock of the Christian family; For the courage of martyrs in all of us followers of Christ, that we may witness to His power to overcome the powers of darkness that are bent on destroying the human family and the moral law. Mary, Mother of the Holy Family, and Mother of our families, pray for us. Amen

From Our Grand Knight!

My Brother Knights,
    My Brother Knights, August and September have been wonderful times for our Tri- Parishes and St. Mary's Parish at Lanesville. We have gotten very thankful of our new Priests, and are starting to remember their names. May we continually support them and pray for them and work together for all our parishes. We also need to pray for our military personnel who bravely serve our country, especially; Michael Baldwin, Sarah Alstott's, Joshua Bibb, Sam Chinn, David Fitzgerald, Marc Richardson, Gary Wilson and all of our soldiers who are fighting in foreign countries

      I hope more K of C members come to our business meetings which are which are the second Tuesday of the month and our social pitch-in dinner on the Forth Tuesday of the month.
We have our Bingo's every Wednesday evening.. We need more volunteers to help sell pull-tabs to make more money for the Community Organizations, Catholic Charities, St. Elizabeth's, Gibault School, and to help disabled children.

      We also have a Fish Fry on the first Friday of every month. We have fried Fish, French fries, baked beans Cole slaw, with white or rye bread, tea, Coffee, punch, and water, with all you can eat. We hope you come and eat some very good food.
May God shine his Blessings on all people born and unborn. God bless America, and continue to pray for an end to abortion, and increase in Vocations for Priests and Nuns. God bless us all and have a blessed September.

“The World Day of Prayer for Peace will bring to the world the Church’s message of peace and reconciliation, so that religion will always be a cause for mutual respect and harmony, and never for violence or hatred,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson.

“In a special way, we remember the brave men and women of the military who work tirelessly, even to the point of sacrificing their own lives, to bring about true peace rooted in justice,” he added.
